Embracing the “Mom New Year”

I’ve been using the term “Mom New Year” to refer to the month of August for the last several years. Having written a family-centered meal planning blog for over 3 years now you start to notice cycles. Whereas January is a big month for goal-setting, reorganizing and the like, August seems to be the “New Year” for moms. It means the start of new routines, new schools, new schedules, new sports, new homework and new friends. It is a time to settle into routine and shed the spontaneity of the summer months.

And since my kids are heading off to preschool themselves for the first time, I find myself in the throes of the “Mom New Year”. Here are a few of my goals as we head into this new season of life.

  1. Exercise – Use at least 2 of the days they are in school to participate in a workout of some type. There is a gym close to the school or come home and do a workout video. Regardless, I have been saying I’m going to do this when they start back to school so I MUST.
  2. Cleaning – Oh how I hate cleaning. I really do. Anyone with me? My usual excuse is that the kids undo things as fast as I clean them so getting things done when they are around is impossible. Well, they won’t be around for 3 hours each day so I don’t have that excuse anymore!
  3. Blogging – I do have a full-fledged resource site and after the summer adventures it is in some need of some TLC. I will definitely be spending much of my time and energy here.
  4. Freezer Cooking – this kind of goes hand and hand with #3 since I run a freezer cooking site but this is more of a personal goal as well. We are more likely to sit and eat as a family at home if I have freezer meals at the ready so I want to make sure that we have our family favorites in addition to blog features.
What about you? Do you have any goals for the “Mom New Year”?

Tricia, I once again want to sing your praises for onceamonthmom.com Thank you very much for all you do! With that being said, I have all of the goals you have, plus some. I need to get better at exercise, cleaning, and blogging. I also will be doing some freezer cooking (thanks to you!) soon.
